Mounting a radiator fan to a Jeep CJ Conversion Radiator

When purchasing our Jeep CJ V8 conversion radiator and combo Jeep conversion fan assembly, we suggest mounting and wiring using the suggested method below:

Use self tapping sheet metal screws to mount the fan assembly to the radiator. Just center the fan shroud and make sure that is lines up with the side brackets and drive the screws.

As to wiring, we suggest a thermal switch kit from the local auto parts store. It has a wire harness, a temp probe and a dial in switch for different temp settings as to when you want the fan to come on as well as a manual over ride to just turn it on at any time. Some guys will wire in to run run the fan at a medium speed all the time and high speed if the temp starts to run up.

Radiator Fluid/Coolant: Monthly Automotive Maintenance Part 2

In this second edition of automotive maintenance tips, we're going to be dealing again with fluids. Who would have imagined all the liquid that a car consumes, besides gasoline? Well, other than mechanics and people who find cars fascinating in any way.

In the previous article of this series, we learned about oil and brake fluid. Next on our list of must know maintenance pointers, will be radiator coolant. Your operator handbook or owner's manual will tell you what type of radiator coolant is best for your car.

Radiator Coolant

This fluid is extremely crucial to your car, as it is what prevents the engine from overheating. Allowing the coolant level to get too low can cause severe damage to your cars engine, leading to repeated breakdowns and costly repairs.

Adding coolant to the radiator. If your car is pre-1970, then you will have to add the coolant straight into the radiator. Some of the newer model German and Swedish luxury or sports cars also require the coolant be added directly to the radiator.

1. Park your automobile on a level part of your driveway.

2. Allow your engine to cool down for about a half hour before you proceed.

3. The radiator cap should be located at the front of the engine, near the middle.

4. Be very careful when you remove the radiator cap, touching it when the engine is hot, could result in severe burns.

5. Once you have twisted off the cap (use rags or a thick glove), look into the radiator, and determine if the fluid level is pretty close to the top. If it isn't, then pour in the coolant until you can see the fluid easily.6. Make sure that when you twist the radiator cap back on, you have it screwed on tightly.

Radiator fluid container. Most American and foreign cars that are available today, have a plastic cistern, or container that holds the radiator coolant.

1. The plastic coolant container will most likely be located close to the radiator. In some cars, it is even labeled. There will be a rubber or plastic hose leading from the radiator to the container.

2. Again, ensure that the engine is not hot when you remove the cap. If the fluid level is lower than the "full line," add coolant until it reaches that line.

3. Do not try to remove the cap if the car has overheated, the reservoir holding the coolant could have become pressurized, and cause any remaining fluid to spray out at you when you twist off the cap. Allow the engine to cool sufficiently.

4. If your car overheats because of low coolant, DO NOT put in straight water, as this can cause further damage. Radiator coolant is half anti-freeze and half-purified water. It is a good idea, to keep a bottle of coolant in your trunk, for situations such as this.

Radiator fluid comes in attractive bottles, and has a somewhat sweet taste. Always keep it out of the reach of children. And if it should spill, clean it up immediately because pets, like kids, only understand that it tastes good, not that it is poisonous.

What if my original radiator cap doesn't work?

Stock plastic aluminum models of radiators normally will use the same cap style as the dealer original. Sometimes with certain foreign applications, the aftermarket radiator may use a different cap than stock. If you receive a part, and the cap does not fit, you can either visit your local parts store with the radiator. You can measure the radiator cap connection diameter and fit a cap based on their size. You can also contact us via a support ticket and we will respond with a cap number that will be stocked at your local parts store. Most of the parts we sell that may require a different cap will come with this information on the e-mailed invoice.

Radiator cracks are a common occurrence and many things cause them - overheating, stress, vibration, pressure. None of which have anything to do with the actual "radiator" unit. If you have a reoccurring problem with cracks - then have your vehicle diagnosed for other issues. Normal procedure is to replace the radiator and keep eye on any signs of overheating in the future. In the event the vehicle runs too hot, pull over and let it cool down to prevent failures such as cracks.
The radiator is normally the first unit to fail in a faulty/malfunctioning cooling system. They even sometimes crack due to extremely cold weather..

If you want to avoid this type of situation - then you can look at the all aluminum racing radiators we have listed on www.Racewayparts.com They will be sturdier and provide better cooling capacity than the stock unit. All use the same aftermarket part number for the radiator (886), This radiator has a 26" core size. Most manufacturing companies have a note on this part that explains the item will also fit the 23" core. This 23" was standard in most CRX HF models of hondas.

What people don't understand is that sometimes, you need to make adjustments to get these radiators to fit the smaller hard to locate 23" style. We've included in this post a general description to the changes that one would make:

The radiator from the 1991 CRX SI and DX models (26 inch core) can fit the CRX HF (23 inch core) if you replace the driver side top radiator mounting bracket and cut off one fan shroud mounting tab.

When you see CORE SIZE: ## x ## and or (##"x##") on Radiator Express ® listings, we are referring to the core size of the radiator, condenser, heater core, etc. The core size can be determined by measuring your product from the inside of one tank to the beginning inside of the opposite tank, also excluding any metal or plastic bracketing material. The core is the area that contains the tubes and fins. Certain applications of radiator will have different core sizes, and it is imperative that you check them prior to purchasing from Radiator Express ®. The Radiator you shipped has extra lines that I don't need, why?

Don't panic!! The extra nipples (TOC, the transmission cooler, or EOC, engine oil cooler) do not need to be capped off and you have in fact received the correct part. It's a closed system - a single bar travels from one connection to the other for each system without interacting with the tube-and-fin area of the radiator. I know, I know… you are imagining the waterfall of coolant all over the place that looks like it will inevitably result from filling the radiator, and you don't believe me. Just cover one of the connections and blow air through the other.. You'll see its just a little pipe. The transmission or engine coolant is cooled through the metal of this pipe - it never interacts with the radiator. For this reason, manufacturer's make the automatic version of a radiator and no manual versions... keeps us from making any mistakes!

Arrived home to find a box on my doorstep from RadiatorExpress.com

Says to self: "Self, I still have about two hours of daylight left, I can change this right now..."

So, at 5:45pm I run the car up on the ramps and pop the box on the new radiator

Ok, pop the hood and speed-cool the radiator with a garden hose (don't feel like scalding myself tonight)

Grab an 8mm wrench and drop the battery cable, take a 10mm socket and remove the six bolts holding the radiator cover on and the fan. Pop the radiator cap, stick a bucket under the petcock and drain the old radiator out

6:20pm, take 1/2" flare nut wrench and undo the tranny cooler fittings. Channel lock pliers handle the hose clamps, ready to pull the radiator out.

6:45, old radiator is out, new radiator in place, fittings back on. 1 gallon of Distilled Water, and 3/4 gallon of glycol in. Reconnect the battery and crank the motor up and let it warm back up. No leaks, everything works. Hood closed and back off the ramps. Done! One hour radiator change.

Take this nasty P.O.S out to the curb for trash pickup tomorrow, take shower, grab a cup of coffee and regail y'all with this little tale

You will find pertinent information about all our radiator, heater core, condenser, and gas tank applications. Most of our listings will mention if the given application fits automatic and or manual. Very few aftermarket replacements are transmission specific. Only for certain racing or older vehicle applications will you commonly see A/T or M/T specific replacements offered. You do not need to make modifications to your vehicle or the unit itself to use a multi-fit construction. If the product does not mention specifically what it fits, that indicates that there is 1 model that fits both applications of auto and manual. Our products are hand tested and come from American based companies that you can depend on. We make this distinction because the quality of part that you install is a very important issue. We do not generally list part numbers on the website, or specific brands due to confusion and potential mis-orders often result by ordering via part number. Most radiators you receive from our service will be sent from a local facility. They will normally have the Radiator Express ® logo on the box. 2006 Ford Explorer Radiator Leak:

If you own a 2006 Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer than you are most likely aware that your radiator will fail will if it has not already done so. While we have not been able to get proper information from ford on the reason for failure, some reports say the radiators are just defective while others have reported that a bracket mount may have caused vibrations that crack or tear the bottom of the radiator.

If you we're looking for a replacement radiator last month, then you may have experienced 1-3 week lead times on replacements. From the looks of it, all the vehicles encountered this failure around the same time period. As for us, we ran out of stock nationwide in 1 week. Within 3 weeks, we couldn't even locate one for a customer.

We've since been able to restock our shelves, and have the 06 Ford explorer radiator listed on http://www.radiatorexpress.com/ for sale for $195. While we still do offer a lifetime warranty, an exclusion has been noted on the part pending investigation of the actual "Cause" of this failure.

Common Radiator Failures

Solder Bloom - Solder corrosion caused by poorly inhibited antifreeze. Tube-to header joints are weakened and corrosion can restrict coolant flow.

Internal Deposits - Rust and leak inhibitors can form solids that collect in the cooling system and restrict flow.

Fin Deterioration - A chemical deterioration of the fins most often caused by road salt or sea water.

Fin Bond Failure - A loss of solder bond between fins and tubes. Fins are loose in core. This causes loss of heat transfer and reduces the strength of the radiator.

Tube - to - Header Leaks - Failure of the solder joint results in coolant loss.

Leaky Tank - to - Header Seam - Failure of the solder joint or cracked headers is generally the result of pressure cycle fatigue.

Blown Tank - to - Header Seam - Usually an indication that the radiator has seen extreme pressures resulting from an exhaust gas leak into the cooling system

Loose Side Piece - Can lead to flexing of the core and radiator tube failure.

Leaky Oil Cooler Fitting - Caused by failure of the solder joint between the radiator tank and oil cooler.

Leaky Inlet / Outlet Fitting - Leaks in this area of the radiator can be caused by fatigue or by corrosion of the solder joint.

Fan Damage - Minor collisions or a failed water pump can result in damage to the radiator.

Over Pressurization - Excessive pressure in the radiator caused by a defective pressure cap or engine exhaust gas leak can destroy the radiator.

Electrolysis - Stray electrical current can cause excessive corrosion of metal components.

Cracked Plastic Tanks - High stress in the radiator can cause premature failure of the plastic tanks.

Steam Erosion - Steam can breakdown the plastic tank which will produce thinning and ultimately holes in the plastic tank. Frequently, white deposits are also found.
